A teenager from Alabama is telling MTV News that she is now a devout Muslim and wants to marry a “Muslim.”
Jana Winter told the network that she’s still adjusting to life as a Muslim and says she is “deeply sorry” for the way she was treated during the election.
She says she doesn’t think she’s ever experienced anything like the “hate” that many people have been subjected to since Donald Trump won the presidency.
“It’s not fair,” Winter told MTV News in a statement, “it’s not right.
I’ve been told to stand up against the president-elect, I’ve had people say to me that I should be killed because I’m Muslim.
I feel like I’ve never been so afraid of my life.”
Winter said that the election was not her choice, but that she felt “betrayed” by her family after Trump was elected.
“I had a family member that was a Democrat and I was told by my mom, ‘you can’t be a Democrat, you’re a bigot.
If you voted for Trump, you’ve lost your mind,'” she said.
Winter said she has been following news reports about her conversion and is not sure if she’s ready to move on.
“When I was younger I didn’t know what the word ‘Muslim’ meant, but now I feel that way,” she said, adding that she has a lot of work to do before she is ready to marry.
Winter has been criticized for her “Muslim” label on social media, and her public statements have led some people to call her a “bigot.”
